Comprised of over 3,000 square miles, White Sands Missile Range is the largest army base currently in operation. It is located in New Mexico and serves as home for many testing ranges for rockets, bombers and other military personnel. It was created in 1945 and served as a test site for an early nuclear device. In the 1960s, several Apollo related activities took place at White Sands Missile Range complex. Over the years, in fact, the facility has been used by many different types of organizations and branches of the military for testing that needs a lot of space.
Today, White Sands Missile Range provides the Army with high quality services for experimentation, test, research, assessment, development, and training. The army is not the only branch of the military that benefits from what is available at White Sands Missile Range. Several civilian companies are known to test equipment here as well as the Department of Defense. One of the largest US army bases in operation, White Sands Missile Range plays an important role in the testing of advanced rocket systems for use by the US Army and other customers.
