Fort Monmouth is situated in New Jersey. It was originally purchased by the government in 1917 and known as Camp Little Silver and Camp Alfred Vail briefly. It 1925, it gained permanent status and received the name Fort Monmouth. The name comes from American Revolutionary War soldiers who died in the Battle of Monmouth. The Army's first radar system was installed at the base in 1938. Although the technology saw the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor coming, no one trusted the technology at the time. By 1946, however, the technology was improved at Fort Monmouth and labeled a feasible tool to use by the US military.
Fort Monmouth has also been home to the US Army Chaplain Center and School. You may also have heard of it because of Julius Rosenberg, who stole plans from the army base and sold them to the Soviet Union. Today, Fort Monmouth is home to the Army's CECOM Life Cycle Management Command, dealing with communications and electronics. Most of those working on the army base are actually civilians contracted by the Department of Defense. Still, it is an important part of the Army's overall mission protecting the citizens of the United States.
